Wanderlust and Cabin Fever
Published Wednesday, April 22nd 2020 - Updated Wednesday, April 22nd 2020If there was ever a time we had Wanderlust (a desire to travel, to explore, to wander), it’s now, right in the middle of this Epidemic meets Cabin Fever. While you might not be able to board a plane at this very moment, and some of your upcoming trips may have been postponed due to the virus, there are a few things that are still available to you.
Here are a few things that might quench your thirst for travel, at least for the time being.
- Check in on live webcams from some of your favorite beaches, or places you’d love to visit one day. You might not be able to feel the ocean breeze, but you can Skype your friend, make some margaritas, and enjoy the real-time view of the waves crashing in.
- Do a National Parks tour from home with your kids! Bonus: they’ll be learning and this can count as home-school hours logged. You can read about some of the tour options here.
Have the kids make a poster of which park they’d best like to visit, and why!
- Post an album to Facebook or Instagram of your last favorite vacation. Is it just me, or is it magical being able to relive those memories of places you’ve been, foods you’ve eaten, and sights you’ve seen, and people you’ve had the pleasure of meeting?
- Glance at that Bucket List, and cross one off.. virtually! You can tour the Great Wall of China (I’d order takeout from your favorite Chinese restaurant while you’re at it… you know, to make the experience “see and taste” authentic), and marvel at the sights and history. Check it out here. You can also “visit” the Louvre, or the Taj Mahal! See other spectacular sights from home, including the Great Barrier Reef, here.
- Have a themed night where you make and enjoy a meal that reminds you of your past travels (mafe peanut butter sauce and rice from Senegal), or a cocktail (the “Bob Marley” from Jamaica) to bring back happy memories.
And lastly, something that is not canceled or postponed is…
Dreaming and planning! That’s one of my personal favorite parts of travel. The “where do we want to go next?” part. Things have been quiet on the travel front in our world lately, but it won’t always be that way! So look at magazines and watch travel shows, and make a list of where you want to go next. Dream about what you’ll do there, and let us help make that trip a reality for you.
And if tonight happens to be a throwback to your last trip to Cancun, cheers to you as you enjoy your margarita and enchiladas. You’ll be back before you know it.
